The new all-electric smart #1 urban SUV is now available for sale and delivery in Australia, signalling the start of an exciting new era down under for the smart brand.

The urban SUV offers unprecedented levels of design and build quality in addition to an exceptionally well-equipped standard specification. It is available in three variants: Pro+, Premium and BRABUS.

The smart #1 urban SUV is priced from $54,900, plus dealer delivery and on road costs, topping out at $67,900 for the potent BRABUS version, with the mdi-spec Premium expected to take the lion’s share of sales at $58,900.

Leading the charge

smart is once again leading the way in the field of efficient, innovative mobility. Indeed, smart launched its first EV test programme more than 15 years ago (in Europe) and was the first established automotive marque to complete the transition from internal combustion to fully electric power in 2019.

With the #1 urban SUV, smart combines the expertise derived from its years at the vanguard of electrification with the premium design of Mercedes-Benz and the advanced engineering power of Geely’s BEV-dedicated SEA platform, to deliver next-generation mobility today.

The proportions of the #1 urban SUV take a different design direction to that of the diminutive city cars for which the brand was known, expanding smart’s appeal and broadening its audience.

Despite this, smart’s dedication to efficiency continues in the new car’s use of space, all- electric powertrain, and engaging style. By combining this ethos with the SUV body style, premium build quality and state-of-the-art features which modern buyers demand, the #1 offers a compelling combination of size and space, luxury and efficiency.

Positioned to perform for premium customers

The smart #1 urban SUV offers drivers class-leading performance and safety in addition to an exceptional level of standard specification.

The smart #1 Pro+ offers everything needed for modern e-mobility – and so much more. It offers a remarkably well-equipped standard specification with an extensive range of driving assistance systems, panoramic sunroof, ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), heated seats, a 360-degree surround camera, intelligent voice assistance, LED lights and a powered tailgate. With anxiety-busting WLTP range of up to 420km and smile-inducing 0-100km/h performance of 6.7 seconds, the Pro+ makes every journey a joy.

In addition to the features already available on the Pro+, the smart #1 Premium offers a sound system by Beats, Head-Up Display (HUD), CyberSparks+ Matrix LED headlights and APA (Automatic Parking Assist). The Premium offers an even greater WLTP range of up to 440km with a state-of-the-art silicon carbide invertor and heat pump for improved response and efficiency, as well as a 22kW three-phase on board charger for 10- 80% AC charging in less than three hours.

The smart #1 BRABUS, opens a completely new chapter for smart and BRABUS, continuing a story that the two brands have been writing since 2003.

The smart #1 BRABUS sets standards and performance unmatched by any rival at its price point. Signalling its intentions with a range of design cues including more aggressive styling, bonnet vents, unique contrast paint and 19-inch Dynamo wheels, the transformation continues within, where an Alcantara steering wheel, microfibre suede seats and headrests with BRABUS design stitching add to the sporty feel of the car alongside red seatbelts and metal pedals.

Naturally, the performance of the smart #1 BRABUS also leaves rivals in its wake, with the standard 200kW of power increased to 315kW and torque up from 343Nm to 584Nm. With all-wheel drive to ensure traction and aid acceleration, as well as a specifically calibrated BRABUS driving mode, this results in an even more thrilling smart experience, unleashing the full potential of the car for incredible 0-100km/h performance of just 3.9 seconds and a WLTP range of up to 400km.

Based on Geely’s EV-specific SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform and staying true to smart’s long-standing drive for practicality, efficiency and style, the #1 makes full use of its 2750mm wheelbase with a spacious five-seat cabin and up to 421 litres of luggage space thanks to a standard sliding second row (986 litres with the rear seats folded down).

Designed with tomorrow in mind, the #1 urban SUV’s practicality and economy are belied by its sophisticated exterior and interior styling. Conceived by the Mercedes-Benz global design team, the #1’s simple yet elegant features include a floating halo roof, concealed door handles and 19-inch alloy wheels.

With a drag coefficient of just 0.29 Cd, the sleek lines and flowing curves of the #1 are for far more than just show, however, optimising the car’s aerodynamic efficiency and maximising its range.

The confidence to explore

The smart #1 premium urban SUV is not only designed for style and performance, but also to be among the safest vehicles on the road. Its exceptional build quality and suite of advanced assistance systems both contribute to the highest standards for active and passive safety.

The smart #1 was awarded a five-star rating in the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) crash test. The car received high scores in all main safety categories: Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Vulnerable Road Users and Safety Assist. This demonstrates smart’s strong commitment to safety as the top priority for its products.

The overall architecture of the new smart #1 has been designed and developed to meet highest industry standards. With a 74% usage of high strength steel and 19% press hardened steel, the smart #1 creates a strong safety environment for its users.

The safety performance is not only reflected in the passive safety configuration, but also, and more importantly, in the overall battery safety protection. smart has adopted multiple technical safeguard measures, including high thermal stability battery core materials, heat insulation of battery modules and structural protection of the battery packs.

Having received a five-star result from EURO NCAP safety tests, the #1 urban SUV furthered its credentials with a second-place finish in the prestigious UK-published What Car? Safety Award 2023, also achieving one of the highest Adult Occupant protection scores of the year with 96%.

“The smart #1 demonstrates that it is possible to make an affordable small electric car that is also safer than many larger models,” said the judges. “This is a significant achievement; small cars must work harder than larger ones to get top safety scores, because they’re lighter and there’s less metal to absorb an impact. With an 88% score, the #1 also does well in the safety assist tests, and that means there’s less likelihood of the car being involved in a collision in the first place.”

The vehicle must be serviced every 20,000km or 1 year (whichever comes first) and maintained by smart appointed authorised dealers in accordance with the vehicle’s standard warranty terms and conditions.

Every car includes a 5-year or 150,000km (whichever comes first) warranty on materials and workmanship, starting from the date of first registration. It covers free vehicle repair and replacement of any defective parts (excluding wear and tear items, and accident repairs).

The smart #1 urban SUV comes with an 8 year or 150,000km ‘state of health’ or equal to 70% high-voltage battery warranty to give you peace-of-mind, fully covered by smart. This high-voltage core components warranty coverers the electric-drive motor, controller, and vehicle control.

All smart genuine parts and accessories come with 2-year and unlimited mileage warranty.

The smart #3 is significantly sportier and more dynamic looking, its silhouette created exclusively for the brand by Mercedes-Benz and is perfectly proportioned to deliver a successful solution for zesty urban mobility.

The thrills continue inside

The smart #3 features premium design thrills inside and out. The exterior of the smart #3 is defined by seamlessly smooth lines and beautifully athletic curves, exuding a vibrantly muscular yet elegantly sensual energy.

The smart #3 is defined by seamless, smooth lines and athletic curves, aimed at enhancing its aerodynamic performance. Compared with the smart #1 urban SUV, the smart #3 Urban SUV coupé features slimmed down LED headlights paired with a strong ‘shark nose’ and A-shaped wide grill.

Along the flanks, the prominent roof meets with the smooth, continuous line that connects the A-pillar and C-pillar, creating an elegantly sporty fastback silhouette. The large wheels add a powerful element, while the eye-catching rear diffuser leaves no question as to its performance intent.

From the rear, the confident curve created by the prominent spoiler, the swooping C-pillar, and dynamic rear structure clearly spell out this car’s intent. It is muscular, premium, and progressively modern, with acute detailing such as the pixelated elements of the taillights.

At 4.4 metres long and 1.8 metres wide, the car combines a sleek coupé exterior with a comfortable and roomy interior.

The exquisite interior is likewise futuristically premium and excitingly sporty. The cockpit mixes oblong and circular shapes evocative of turbine intakes. All surfaces and design elements invite the human touch, while individualised colour combinations add a personal touch.

The sculpted dashboard flows seamlessly into a high console, housing the central, prominent 12.8-inch elevated screen. Sporty seats with integrated head rests embrace the driver and front passenger.

The play of natural and artificial illumination from the large halo roof and multi-coloured ambient lighting further enhances interior atmosphere. The unique infotainment system, equipped with a 13-speaker Beats audio system rounds out the breathtaking avant-garde smart #3 cabin experience in pure sonic style.

smart #3 impresses with range, acceleration, and short charging times

The sporty appearance of the coupé is also reflected in its impressive performance: peak power ranges from 315kW for the BRABUS to 200kW for the Pro+ and Premium variants, which sets a benchmark in this segment.

In terms of acceleration, the smart #3 is even faster in the 0-100km/h sprint, taking just 3.7 seconds (3.9 seconds for the BRABUS #1). The Pro+ covers the distance in a still impressive 5.8 seconds.

The smart #3 also increases its overall range: to between 435 and 455km. The optimised suspension system and the longer 2,785 mm wheelbase combined with a very aerodynamic silhouette features a drag coefficient of just 0.27, enabling a dynamic driving experience.

A convenient charging experience remains a high priority for smart and its customers. With efficient DC- charging technology, and a performance of up to 150 kW/h, the smart #3 charges from 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes.

Thrillingly Engaging with intelligent technology

Intelligent technology, on par with segment leaders, pairs with the only truly engaging UX in the car industry. This efficient, advanced intelligent technology creates a genuinely captivating, thrilling and personalised user experience.

Smooth driving experience thanks to state-of-the-art software with responsive OTA updates

Thanks to its modern software environment, the smart #3 is an intelligent companion in everyday life and supports the driver with an intuitive ecosystem for driving. This includes various systems as part of the smart pilot assist, such as a highway assistant (HWA) and automatic parking assist (APA). The smart #3 also features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which allows drivers to bring smartphone features and apps to the infotainment display. To ensure that the system is always up to date, smart implements constructive feedback and can develop features quickly and publish over-the-air (OTA) updates at short intervals that can be implemented directly by the user without a visit to the service centre. In 2023, four OTA updates were successfully rolled out for smart #1 customers, for instance.
